The Baromedical Research Foundation

Hyperbaric Research Prize

2008 Hyperbaric Research Prize Recipient

Guidelines and Criteria for Nomination & Award

The Hyperbaric Research Prize has been introduced to further encourage the scientific advancement of hyperbaric medicine. The Hyperbaric Research Prize will recognize a scholarly published work or body of work(s) either as original research or as a significant advancement in the understanding of earlier published science. The scope of this work includes doctoral and post-doctoral dissertations. The Foundation does not preclude the nomination of individuals who have been awarded other prizes and honors for this same research. The Hyperbaric Research Prize will be awarded annually whenever a suitable nominee is identified.

The Hyperbaric Research Prize is international in scope. The awardee may reside or work in any country in the world. However, the research must be available in English to the Foundation’s Nominations Review and Awards Committees.

The Hyperbaric Research Prize takes the form of a commemorative plaque and a US$ 10,000.00 honorarium.

Candidates will have produced, within three years of their nomination, research that:

  1. Identifies important basic mechanisms supporting the existing uses or potentially new uses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  2. Results in the elevation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to Level 1 evidence of efficacy for a given condition
  3. Represents ground-breaking clinical findings related to new applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy

The following process has been established for selection and award of The Hyperbaric Research Prize. The award will be bestowed only through this nomination and selection process.

A.  No person may be self-nominated.

B. A prepared Nomination Package, available from the Foundation, must be used for each nomination. It is to be returned to the Foundation at the address provided on the nomination form.

C. The nominee will be sent a letter from the Foundation notifying him/her of their nomination. There will also be a letter from the Foundation to be signed by the nominee. This letter will provide authorization for the Foundation to proceed with the screening process.

D. The nominating process will extend from January 1 to December 31 in each calendar year

E.  The Hyperbaric Research Prize will not be awarded in a given year if no qualifying research is identified.

F. Nominations Review Committee:
The Nominations Review Committee is invited to serve for a two year term. Its members will vote annually to forward nominations from the medical and scientific communities to the Awards Committee. Nominations will be forwarded if they receive a 50% or greater vote of approval. Nominations Review Committee members may be reappointed to additional two year terms.

Nominations Review Committee members are not permitted to self-nominate but can be nominated by others. Should this occur, their nominations will be deferred to the following year and at which time the nominee(s) will be cycled off the Nominations Review Committee. This process will avoid any actual conflict or appearance of any conflict.
