Stephen Thom Awarded the 2008 Hyperbaric Research Prize
Stephen R. Thom MD, PhD, has been awarded the inaugural Hyperbaric Research
Prize. Sponsored by the Baromedical Research Foundation, the Hyperbaric Research
Prize has been introduced to encourage and recognize excellence in hyperbaric
research.
Nominations are accepted on behalf of those who have either identified the mechanistic basis for existing or potential uses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, generated Level 1 evidence of clinical efficacy for a currently approved use, or have produced ground-breaking clinical findings that identify a new hyperbaric application.
Dr. Thom is Chief of Hyperbaric Medicine, Institute of Environmental Medicine and Professor of Emergency Medicine, at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, in Philadelphia. He was recognized for his work that has identified the mechanistic basis for hyperbaric oxygen’s role in the treatment of diabetic wounds.
Dr. Thom was presented with the award, which included a $10,000.00 stipend, during ‘Hyperbaric Medicine 2008’, in Columbia, South Carolina, on April 4.
